Companion Resources for Against the Current
Introducing the Living Bibliography and Extended Photo Gallery for Against the Current
Books don’t end when they’re printed. They continue through reading, conversation, memory, and reference.
As part of the publication of Against the Current: Father Tom Oddo and the New American Catholic by Tyler Bieber, Unencumbered Press is sharing two accompanying resources on our website: a living bibliography and an extended photo gallery. These materials are best understood as appendices—designed to support the book, extend its context, and remain available to readers beyond the printed or digital page.
The Living Bibliography for Against the Current
The living bibliography gathers the sources used in the research and writing of Against the Current. At present, it reflects the materials cited in the book itself: archival documents, journalism, interviews, and secondary sources that shaped the narrative.
Over time, as additional materials surface and as the author and publisher continue work on a Wikipedia page for Father Tom Oddo, the bibliography may expand. For now, it serves as a transparent record of the book’s sources and a reference point for readers who want to trace its foundations.
The Extended Photo Gallery
Printed books have physical limits. Page counts, production costs, and design constraints all shape what can be included. Ebooks, while more flexible in some ways, have limitations related to formatting, file size, and ensuring a consistent reader experience across devices. Not every visual material considered during a book’s development can be included in its final published form.
The extended photo gallery allows us to share additional photographs and documents considered during the development of Against the Current that could not reasonably be included in either the hardcover or ebook editions.
These materials provide broader visual context for the people, places, and institutions that shaped Tom Oddo’s life and work. Captions identify original sources and archival details, and images can be viewed individually at full size for closer study.
The gallery is also part of our commitment to accessibility. Presenting these materials digitally allows us to include descriptive alt text and contextual information, ensuring the images are meaningful rather than purely illustrative.
Why These Companion Resources Exist
These materials are not meant to replace the book or stand apart from it. They exist to sit alongside the text—to document sources, preserve context, and offer readers another way into the material.
Making them available on the Unencumbered Press website allows readers, educators, and researchers to return to them as needed, whether for citation, teaching, or personal study.
An Ongoing Reference
Both the living bibliography and the extended photo gallery may change over time. Updates will be made thoughtfully and in service of accuracy, clarity, and care. In that sense, these appendices are open-ended—not expansive in scope, but open to revision as the historical record continues to be engaged.
We invite readers of Against the Current to explore these resources as companions to the book and to return to them as the work continues to be read, taught, and discussed.
Future Companion Resources
The living bibliography and extended photo gallery are the first companion resources available for Against the Current. Additional materials may be developed over time to support classroom use, libraries, book clubs, and community discussion, including teaching or course adoption guides, reader and book club guides, and a timeline of Father Tom Oddo’s life and work.
