Publisher’s Hot Tip | Use Page Breaks, Not the Enter Key
Are You an Author or Creator Sharing Documents?
When formatting your manuscript or other document, avoid the rookie mistake of pressing Enter repeatedly to start a new page. Instead, use the Page Break function, which is cleaner and more professional and ensures your formatting stays intact across devices.
Here’s why Page Breaks are essential
- Consistency: Chapters or sections will always begin on a fresh page.
- Professionalism: Clean formatting makes a great first impression on publishers, editors, etc., and shows attention to detail.
- Efficiency: Editors can focus on your words, not fixing messy layouts.🙌🏻

How to Insert a Page Break:
- Microsoft Word: Insert → Page Break.
- Google Docs: Insert → Break → Page Break.
- Scrivener or Other Writing Software: Look up the specific shortcut.
Shortcut Keys
Using these shortcuts will save you time and ensure clean formatting in your manuscript!
The keyboard shortcuts are the same for Microsoft Word and Google Docs:
- Windows:
Ctrl + Enter - Mac:
Command (⌘) + Enter
