Against the Current: Father Tom Oddo and the New American Catholic
by Tyler Bieber
This is the true story of Father Thomas Oddo (1944–1989), a priest who co-founded Dignity USA, led the University of Portland, and became a national voice for inclusion in the Church. Blending history, biography, and cultural reflection, the book reveals Oddo’s courage, compassion, and vision for a more just faith community. For readers of LGBTQ+ history, modern Catholicism, and untold activism, Against the Current shows how Oddo embodied the values of a New American Catholic—long before talk of a first American pope.
