Featured Book Review | From Pain to Power: How ‘The Chalice and the Blade’ Illuminated My Path to Healing and Advocacy
A Journey of Healing and Understanding
Certain synchronistic events led to this book being a part of my life. Following the end of an abusive relationship three years ago, I began a physical, emotional, and spiritual journey of healing. One of the most difficult aspects of this healing journey was trying to intellectually understand why partner abuse happens and why so many women let it happen or hide that it is happening, myself included.
The questions that repeatedly surfaced centered around my inability to accept why the pain my partner experienced from early life events led to violence, even when there was unlimited support and resources. I could never understand why my unconditional love could not “fix” the situation.
Discovering The Chalice and the Blade
One of the spiritual advisors I worked with mentioned The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future by Riane Eisler (1987), telling me that it could help me understand some of the questions I was asking. A few months later, in my domestic violence survivor group at a social activist center, after my counselor got to know more of my situation and some of my intellectual desire to understand the bigger picture of domestic abuse, she also recommended The Chalice and the Blade.
The minute I read the introduction, I understood why multiple sources had suggested it to me. The author herself began researching the ideas for The Chalice and the Blade based on lifelong questions that she had begun asking in her early years after her own traumatic experiences during the Nazi takeover of Austria. These questions plagued her as she learned more about the world and began studying different cultures and the human situation and had children of her own. She considers the search for the answers to these questions her lifelong quest.
- Why do we hunt and persecute each other?
- Why is our world so full of man’s infamous inhumanity to man—and to woman?
- How can human beings be so brutal to their own kind?
- What is it that chronically tilts us toward cruelty rather than kindness, toward war rather than peace, toward destruction, rather than actualization?
Using these questions as a guide, the author takes the reader on an incredible journey. Through her research, the uncovering of the truth in the false histories we are told, using psychological and anthropological lenses to shed light on the human condition in the past and present, she gives a fair, evidence-based perspective on what is missing from our current world view.
She explains how “re-examining human society from a gender-holistic perspective” has begun a cultural transformation. In asking these questions, we begin to see that we currently exist under a model, and have for much of recent history, where one-half of humanity is ranked over the other—the-dominator model, also called patriarchy or “the blade.”
She describes the alternative, a society where the principle is based on linking rather than ranking, diversity not being equal to superiority, women valued equal to men, a partnership model, the “chalice.”
She asks what we will do now, at the evolutionary crossroads humanity is facing.
- How do we move to a new world of psychological and social rebirth?
- How do we shift from a dominator to a partnership society, transform our old ways of thinking, and unfetter our creative imagination?
- How can we create a world where both men and women can discover what being human means?
Moving Forward as an Advocate
Reading this book gave me the much broader lens I needed to comprehend the domestic abuse that occurs in otherwise loving relationships. Understanding our actions as humans, based on unfair and unbalanced societal expectations and norms and the expected control and submission of gender roles historically, along with the repression and punishment of emotions and vulnerabilities as weaknesses, changed my view of my former relationship and arguably even my own definition of what constitutes “love.”
Reading this book fueled my healing and inspired me to move forward as an advocate for all women experiencing domestic abuse and systemic injustice. It inspired me to publish my own experience, told through poetry, leading to the publication of Altered Tarot: The End of Love in 2022—a collaboration between k. hiatt and myself, featuring her deeply feminine and bold nature photography alongside my poetry, which weaves together a journey of love, loss, and self-discovery.

I created this video after reading the book for the first time as a way to explore the transformative themes and enduring impact of Riane Eisler’s The Chalice and the Blade. This discussion explores how the book has shaped my understanding of gender roles, societal structures, and the potential for a more compassionate and balanced world. It’s a conversation for anyone seeking to grasp the deeper truths behind our collective human experience and the steps we can take toward creating a society rooted in partnership and equality.
